Parental Rights Law

National Fertility Law Center has over a decade of experience in providing parental rights law services. We can help you with family formation by:

  1. Preparing co-parenting agreements. A co-parenting or "coparentage" agreement is a legal document that clearly explains the rights and responsibilities of each parent in states where a co-parent adoption is not available under that state's adoption laws.
  2. Bringing co-parent adoption (also called "second parent adoption") proceedings, in which an unmarried couple, including a same-sex couple, are granted equal legal status as parents, with all of the associated rights and responsibilities.
  3. Bringing legal proceedings to obtain a court order that both parents' names, including those of same-sex parents, be placed on the birth certificate. This option is available in California; the laws of other states vary and we can inform you of your options.

We also provide other services essential to family formation, including:

  1. Drafting healthcare durable powers of attorney.
  2. Providing assistance in obtaining passports for international newborns.
  3. Providing assistance with obtaining apostilled documents such as birth certificates. "Apostillation" is a method of certifying documents so that they will have legal recognition in many countries besides the United States. We can advise you on the details.
