How to Obtain U.S. Birth Certificate for Baby Born by Surrogacy / Surrogate

Birth Certificates

Q: Will my child's birth certificate automatically be sent to me?
A: Generally, you will have to make a written request to obtain your child's birth certificate. This can most easily be done using www.vitalchek.com

Q: How long must I wait prior to requesting my child's birth certificate?
A: For births occurring within the State of California, you should allow at least three months to pass following the birth before requesting your child's birth certificate. For births occurring outside the State of California, please contact our office for further information.

Q: Is it possible to obtain my child's birth certificate within a short time frame?
A: Upon completing the birth certificate worksheet at the hospital following the birth, please be sure to notify the birth certificate clerk at the hospital that you need an expedited birth certificate. Expedited birth certificates can usually be obtained within a matter of days.

Q: Why must my surrogate's home address be noted on my child's birth certificate?
A: For births occurring within the State of California, the California Office of State Vital Records requires that the birth mother's address be noted on the confidential portion of the birth certificate. This is done for statistical purposes only to track the number of births throughout the different regions/counties/cities of California. The birth certificate you will obtain will not show this information. For births occurring outside the State of California, please contact our office for further information.
